The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s (FWC) Division of Habitat and Species Conservation (HSC), is seeking a qualified candidate to serve as an Art Editor as part of a team of professionals who provide a broad range of communications and graphics expertise to help further the agency’s mission.

The FWC’s Division of Habitat and Species Conservation integrates scientific data with applied habitat and species management to maintain stable or increasing populations of fish and wildlife. Conservation integration efforts focus on the ecosystem or landscape scale to provide the greatest benefits to the widest possible array of fish and wildlife species.

The position is responsible for timely and accurate processing and or approval, as appropriate, of vendor invoices and warrants for payment of goods received or services rendered to avoid automatic interest penalty payments to said vendors. Responsible for following the provisions and requirements in Section 215.422, Florida Statutes, related to the Department of Financial Services rules and FWC’s invoice processing and warrant distribution procedures. Responsibilities may include legislative interactions. The position is expected to courteously assist Commission constituents to resolve questions or problems they may have in matters relating to the Commission, its programs or fish and wildlife conservation, generally. It is expected to actively garner public support for agency objectives and programs by serving Florida’s citizens in a positive and proactive manner.

This position reports to the Communications Director for the FWC’s Division of Habitat and Species Conservation and will work closely with the Division’s communications team and resource managers. The person in this position may be needed to work outside of standard business hours for urgent issues and minimal travel may be required.

Work at the FWC is cross-functional meaning duties may cross division/office lines. The Commission expects employees to function across FWC’s organizational structure by providing their skills and expertise wherever needed through work on teams or as directed.

Duties And Responsibilities

The primary functions for this position include but are not limited to the following:

  • Collaborates with the division communications team, program coordinators and creative staff to produce outreach materials including videos, photographs, PowerPoint presentations, infographics, flyers, webpages, signs/banners, advertisements, logos, vehicle wraps, memes/gifs, animations, and other communications tools.
  • Coordinates with communications staff and subject matter experts to update content and organize Division web pages in a way that is aesthetically pleasing and easy to navigate.
  • Assists with video and photo shoots related to the Division priority needs.
  • Produces work that includes strong illustration and composition, use of color management and theory, file management and formatting for print, digital (social media and web), photo and video.
  • Creates or revises documents to ensure they comply with the American Disabilities Act.
  • Assists with internal communications strategies, efforts and projects.
  • Develops printing specifications, manages bid process, and is responsible for timely and accurate processing and approval of vendor invoices.
  • Maintains graphics, artwork, photo and video files so they can be quickly and easily accessed for future use.
  • Stays up to date with current and new industry technologies.
  • Works on multiple projects under tight deadlines, maintains strong communications and client consultation skills and acts as a liaison between staff and outside vendors.
  • Assists with coordination of production elements for photos, video, website work and graphic design projects to ensure all deadlines are met.
  • Responsible for timely and accurate processing and/or approval, as appropriate, of vendor invoices and warrants for payment of goods received or services rendered to avoid automatic interest penalty payments to said vendors.
  • Responsible for adhering to the provisions and requirements of Section 215.422, F.S., related to State Comptroller’s rules, as well as Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission invoice processing and warrant distribution procedures.
  • Actively garner public support for agency objectives and programs by serving Florida’s citizens in a positive and proactive manner.
  • Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Knowledge of general office procedures and practices and ability to implement them.
  • Interest in and knowledge of fish and wildlife species, conservation and management is preferred.
  • Knowledge of the principles of artistic design.
  • Skilled in preparing original artwork and sizing and arranging illustrations
  • Skilled in preparing photographs for publication.
  • Skilled in designing and laying out copy for production.
  • Knowledge of marketing communications concepts.
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, strong critical thinking and the ability to coordinate multiple projects at one time.
  • Proven knowledge of printing processes
  • Professional experience using Microsoft 365 apps including Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Teams, OneDrive, and SharePoint.
  • Professional experience using After Effects and Adobe Creative Cloud Apps including Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere Pro and more for photography, design and video.
  • Skilled at creating, updating and managing webpages that are concise, understandable and easy to navigate. Umbraco experience preferred.
  • Ability to listen effectively, understand and evaluate information/data.
  • Ability to plan, organize, coordinate and complete work assignments and projects according to established deadlines.
  • Ability to quickly and effectively prioritize and process information and requests from external and internal sources.
  • Ability to positively communicate and build relationships with a variety of professionals including staff and vendors.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service and establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Desired Minimum Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in art and one year of commercial art or illustrating experience; or
  • Completion of a program of study in commercial/advertising art or studio or applied art from a vocational/technical school, commercial art school or community college and three years of illustrating or commercial art experience.
  • Experience as described above can substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required college education.
